![]() Responding to fans during an Instagram Live Q&A, showrunner Rafe Judkins revealed that season 1 is “adapting the whole series, not just Eye of the World”, so we'll be seeing some creative liberties taken with its interweaving narratives. Season 1 won't only focus on the series’ first book – The Eye of the World – either. Those who adore Jordan's works, then, will have some new things to look out for when Amazon's adaptation arrives. Diehard fans of the novels will, but the show does diverge from the source material in some instances. That synopsis aside, most viewers won't know anything about The Wheel of Time's plot. The Dragon Reborn also has the ability to destroy humanity instead of liberating it, so the fate of the world rests on their shoulders. Together, the group hope to defeat the Dark One for good, but their journey will be far from straightforward. His male and female friends – Matrim ‘Mat’ Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, Nynaeve al'Meara and Egwene al'Vere – may also be the reincarnated hero that Moiraine seeks. Rand, though, isn’t the only character who could be the so-called Dragon Reborn. Set in an unnamed world (fans call it The Randlands or The World of the Wheel), The Wheel of Time follows Rand al’Thor, a humble boy who lives in a small village known as the Two Rivers.Īfter Rand’s home is attacked by the forces of the Dark One, an evil entity who wants to destroy the world, he’s rescued by Moiraine, a powerful sorceress and member of a secret all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, and her Warder guardian Lan Mandragoran.īelieving that the Dark One was seeking out the Dragon Reborn – a prophesied champion who can defeat the lord of evil – Moiraine leads Rand on a dangerous, continent-spanning journey that will decide the fate of the world. If its story is a fantasy epic that will span multiple seasons (more on this later), then, what do we know about season 1's plot specifically? Much like Game of Thrones, it also has a stacked list of characters (almost 3,000 named individuals) and locations, as well as multiple plot threads to follow, across its 11,308 pages. The book series, which was completed by fellow fantasy author and Wheel of Time fan Brandon Sanderson after Jordan’s death in 2007, comprises 14 mainline novels. The Wheel of Time is a convoluted, intricate story. Just put aside disbelief at how good Xiao Nai is at so many things (I didn't even mention them all).Spoilers for The Wheel of Time book series follow. Overall better than average and fun to watch. Several of the characters that initially present themselves as bad, for conflict's sake, are allowed to grow and change, which was nice. Er Xi ( Xiaotong Mao) is a fun character and provides some comic relief, as does Xiao Nai's college roommates and programming buddies. Wei Wei's contributions to work are limited to traditional female inputs such as ordering meals, and suggesting/arranging sleeping cots (but, she is only an intern as she is two years behind Xiao Nai in school). There is more kissy face than I expect in Asian dramas, but my wife liked it. It is a little too stereotypical in that Xiao Nai takes control of the relationship and while Wei Wei may balk at times, she doesn't resist very long. ![]() Wei Wei is among the top ten players in the game, a good programmer, tallish, thin and attractive. He and Bei Wei Wei ( Shuang Zheng) do get along well for an Asian drama, with few misunderstandings that are easily corrected with direct communication. Xaio Nai is so perfect that female students treat him as a rock star. ![]() In Asian dramas this is somewhat common in the cold, arrogant, rich male and I think I'm going to have to start labeling them all, autistic. He often then stops and talks to them without looking at them. Xiao Nai walks past other people without looking at them, even when they clearly want to talk to him. I'm kidding a little bit here, but not much. It is a lot, especially when I realized he is autistic. The top-rated character in a game, the best programmer, the top intramural basketball player, the top intramural swimmer and the most handsome guy on campus. The male protagonist, Xiao Nai ( Yang Yang), is an almost perfect character with few flaws. Later in the series the programming company started by the main male character becomes more central to the story. It ties in computer gaming relationships with real-life relationships and that did make it more interesting until that drops by the wayside later in the series. It is a nice story about a young nerdy couple in college and their romance. ![]() As is my wont, I'm reviewing this against other Asian dramas. ![]()
